Compared to its population the Faroe Islands have a large number of artists. To most of these, the Faroese nature is the main source of inspiration. Yet there is no art school in the Faroes and anyone who wants an education within arts has to go abroad. In the course of time many foreign artists have been drawn by the dramatic scenery of the  islands and  the ever changing light.

In these times of globalisation many small nations choose to strengthen their cultural identity and it is partly on these grounds that  the Faroese Ministry of Culture now for some time has had wishes to establish a School of Arts in the Faroes. The school is to embrace subjects such as music, acting,  pictorial art,  sculpture,  textiles and multimedia. The placing of the school is to be on Sandoy near the village of Sandur.

The main theme of the project is the relations between the building and the landscape. How do you actually sense nature? Studies show, that we use our vision by far less than than we use our  olfactory sense for instance , and especially our  tactile sense, including the kinetic sense – the way we move in the landscape. This movement and the wish to be close to the nature has contributed to the generation of shape and look.

It has also been a must to maintain an architectural relationship to the context. I have studied original Faroese building traditions versus contemporary random architectural building style.

I have been inspired by the Faroese nature including the cultivated in-field within the vast landscape. The in-field is a cultivated piece of land, where the flocks of sheep are kept out by the means of  simple stone walls and outside the stone walls there is this huge, almost infinite green mountain landscape.
